  We
are safely arrived in Spaansewater, Curacao. Had Tiffany been with
us, she would not have been happy with our first hour and a half.
No sooner than we dropped the mooring at 0615, than we noticed the
squall clouds to the south...complete with lightning and rain. Thanks
to the radar and lucky timing, however, we sailed between the two.
We shut the engine down after a little more than an hour, and from
then on the sailing just got better and better! The wind shifted
SSW, and we essentially close-reached across. We made a slight detour
to salute Klein Curacao, an incredibly flat islet with a suggestive
lighthouse, a wrecked Russian freighter (from the time the birds
pooped all over the lighthouse's solar panels) and absolutely nothing
else except goats, in honor of our regular stops there on the Aquanaut
              Explorer back in 1988- 89.
 Spaansewater (also called
Spanish Water) is a virtual inland lake surrounded by bluffs linked
to the ocean by a 60' wide channel. The bay has many fingers, with
lots of deluxe residences lining the hillsides. Our friends Mac
& Sam of Sandy Lee came out to meet us and guide us in, and no sooner
than we shut down, Ron and Beth, friends from the VI buzzed over.
It's a neat place A shame we intend to be here only 4-5 days. |
